How to plan your own wedding? 10 tips
Planning your own wedding can be fraught with problems and headaches and, if you are not careful, the stress and strain of all the arranging can even take the shine off the big day itself. If you do it right, though, then making all the arrangements yourself can be fun and exciting, so here are ten tips to help you plan your own wedding:
1. Buy a wedding planning book
You are certainly not the first person to have planned your own wedding, do there are plenty of good wedding planning books that you can buy. They include useful hints and tips, to do lists, and blank pages for you to write down contact numbers, supplier details, and spaces for pictures so that you can keep a record of the preparation for your wedding as well.
2. Set your budget first
Weddings can be very expensive and it’s easy to get carried away! Make sure that you plan your budget before you start spending and then you won’t find yourself running out of money toward the end of the planning period.
3. Work out your guest count early on
Much of what you spend on your wedding will be dependent on the number of people that you are going to invite to your wedding, so work out the numbers early on in the planning. You can’t even start to look for venues, until you have done this.
4. Get some help
There will probably be no shortage of volunteers, so get some help with your wedding from friends or family and don’t try and do it all yourself. Be firm, though, and make sure they remember whose wedding it is, because everyone has their own idea of the perfect wedding.
5. Don’t get forced into doing things that you don’t want to do
Never lose sight of the fact that this is your day, not your families! This can be a bit tricky, especially if your family is contributing to the cost, so ask for their input, but take the decisions yourself.
6. Too many cooks spoil the broth
Everyone loves a wedding and everyone loves shopping, but, be careful not to have too many people with you when you are buying things for your wedding. Choosing the dress can be the worst for this, because if you take too many people with you, will never be able to reach a decision.
7. Spend as much as you can on the photos
If you are working to a tight budget, try not to make the photos the thing that you cut back on. A good photographer can make all the difference to the quality of your photos and those pictures are the memory of your day that you will want to keep forever.
8. Shop around for everything
Never accept the first quote for anything, be that the venue, the catering or the flower. Shopping around will not only save you some money, but it might also give you some ideas that you hadn’t thought of.  Also, don’t be afraid to haggle over price because the suppliers want to get your business, so their first price is not always their last.
9. Be prepared to make cuts to your guest list
Everyone’s first inclination is to invite everybody they know to their wedding and then budget around that number. Remember that much of the cost per wedding is a cost per guest, so the fewer guests, the more you can spend on each person.
10. Have fun doing it!
Allow yourself plenty of time to plan your wedding and take days off as well. It can be a stressful experience, if you let it get to you, so try and have fun doing it. Get the help when you need it, and take advice from suppliers too. This is a once in a lifetime experience, so enjoy it!
